McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton is planning to make a decision regarding his future over the mid-season break, according to ESPN.
The 27-year-old is out of contract at the end of the 2012 season, and is rumoured to be frustrated by the MP4-27’s current lack of pace. However, Hamilton claims the team’s dip in form will influence his decision.
“To be honest, you have to base your decisions on much, much longer than such a short period of time,” Hamilton told Russian news agency R-Sport.
“Only half a year cannot decide six years of partnership, or actually 13 years of partnership. I’ve been with them since I was 13, so it’s 14 years, so it’s much more than these small details, it’s a much, much bigger picture.
“We haven’t sat down and discussed anything yet but I’m sure over the summer break, when we have the summer break it would be nice to get something in place. That would be a time when we can be more relaxed and make the most sensible decision for the future.”
Although he is clearly frustrated by his car’s lack of pace, the Brit insists he has a degree of loyalty to the team that got him into the sport.
“There are lots of things to take into account. These people have supported me; these are the people that got me into Formula One.
“But, you know, I want to win. I’m not that young any more so I want to make sure that whatever I do I make the right decision so I can maximize my career, you know. I just need to make sure that I’m winning. That’s what I exist for, that’s what I train and work for every day.”
With Mark Webber signing a new deal at Red Bull, Hamilton’s options are slowly becoming limited. There may be a seat available at Ferrari for 2013, yet the relationship between the Brit and Scuderia first driver, Fernando Alonso, can be described as fractious.
Lotus and Mercedes have also been mooted as possible destinations, but a move to either would be a step down in terms of team stature.
