It seems sometimes that there are two sides to Pastor Maldonado. He can deliver brilliant composed drives such as in Spain, yet can leave heads shaking as he did at Silverstone.
The Williams driver is in his second season, and the Venezuelan has spent both being the bad boy of Formula One, a reputation he cannot shake off.
His latest incident with Sergio Perez infuriated the Mexican to the point he labelled Pastor a dangerous driver, a tag no racer desires.
This year Maldonado has undoubtedly improved as the Williams team have come good again, but if not for a few incidents he could have helped the team to more points. His drive in Spain was faultless, so why have there not been more performances in that style?
He threw away vital points in Australia after crashing on the last lap, Malaysia his engine blew; not his fault and in Monaco qualifying he squeezed Perez, persuading the FIA to slap him a five place grid penalty; ruining his race.
In Canada he was on course to go into Q3, but slammed the wall of champions, ruining any hopes of gaining a good finish. In Valencia he pushed Lewis Hamilton into the barrier on the penultimate lap handing him another fine.
And more recently this weekend in Silverstone he left little room for Sergio Perez, causing him to retire, and ending any hopes of points for his team, again. The Venezuelan was handed a fine and reprimanded by the stewards.
There must come a point when a driver who has been in many incidents can’t keep turning a blind eye to all of this. He has cost his team so many valuable points and in a season where they count more than most.
When Hamilton was having a slap-happy season last year he spent the winter looking in the mirror. It’s time for Maldonado to do the same. He isn’t a dangerous driver, just an undisciplined one.
He needs to refocus his energies positively because he has so much more potential than this, more potential than most on the grid anyway. If he doesn’t refocus and we keep seeing these incidents, it won’t be long before Maldonado will be forced to wave goodbye to Formula One.
