Heikki Kovalainen insists his focus will remain with Caterham for this season, as that will give him the best opportunity to secure a competitive drive in the future.
The Finn has been with the Malaysian outfit since they debuted under the Lotus name. They have since switched to Caterham, as the former brand took over from Renault for the start of the 2012 season.
After a disappointing period with McLaren between 2008-09, Kovalainen has regained some integrity at the back-end of the grid, producing some strong displays.
The latest rumours suggest that Kovalainen could be in line to take Felipe Massa’s seat at Ferrari, as the Scuderia are unsure as to whether Sergio Perez is ready to step up. It would likely be a temporary position, as the Maranello-based outfit line up a promising young racer ahead of 2014, but would give the 30-year-old the opportunity to score points on a regular basis.
Sauber, however, seems to be a more realistic option, and Kovalainen refused to rule out a switch.
“It’s rumours and that’s all I can say,” he told Motorsport-Total.com.
“(Sauber) seem to be very strong this year, but that’s all I can say. My focus is on maximising my performance here at Caterham and giving my best to the team.
“That puts me in the best possible position in the market if I want to move teams. I don’t even know what Caterham’s plans are – maybe they don’t want me anymore…”
The Finn also suggested that a sensational return to McLaren would interest him.
“For me, being at McLaren was a dream come true,
“They are a great team, a top team – no question. I know exactly what happened at that time, and what would happen if I got the chance in the future. I would have no problem (going back).
“They are a great team and I am still in touch with lots of McLaren guys, (and) I have a very good relationship with Martin Whitmarsh.
“At the time, everything just did not fit together, but there were reasons. Since then, a lot has changed.”
