McLaren have confirmed that they are considering developing a double DRS system to use for the remainder of the 2012 season.
Lotus and Mercedes are already using the tool, and now the Woking-based outfit have confirmed that they will look to run their own take on the method after the mid-season break.
Double DRS works, essentially, by channelling air from the rear-wing, through a system of tubes to the front-wing. This is stalled once DRS is activated, giving the car a straight line speed boost due to lowering downforce.
Lotus ran a similar system during practice at Hungary, and are looking to implement it ahead of the second half of the season.
Now according to Sporting Director, Sam Michael, the team are researching for their own take on the system.
“It’s not like the Lotus one, but we have got a system like that,” He told Autosport.
“As for the chances of us bringing it, I don’t know yet.
“We will look at all the programmes and see if it is feasible, because it requires work and it detracts from normal upgrades as well. So it is quite difficult to make the system work, as Lotus are discovering.
“But like anything in the pit lane, if we see a new idea then the guys jump on it, they analyse it and, if we decide that it will be a benefit to the team, then we will bring it in.
“There is possibly the question of a wasted resource on it.
“As for Lotus, they are damn quick already, and if they add that then they will be even quicker.”
McLaren are currently second in the Constructors’ Standings, and will be looking to overhaul Red Bull’s 53-point advantage after the summer break.
