dull paint finish with scratches

i am working on a pro tour 67 chevelle and tried my hand at a two tone paint using testors lacquer paint.  did a light gray metallic and a pewter metallic on the bottom.  top coat is a candy apple red.  body and paint look good with mild orange peel.  i wet sanded the body starting off with 4k and working up to 12k and then using a buffing compound.   afterwards i used mequiar's scratch remover  with some nufinish car polish.  the orange peel is gone but now i have scratches and the paint is dull. did i do something wrong or did i not do something enough?  any help will be great
