Sebastian Vettel has got what could be Red Bull’s revival weekend in Singapore off to a good start by registering the fastest time of FP1.
The defending World Champion’s time of 1.50.566 was enough to secure top spot from McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, who was just 0.049 seconds adrift.
Jenson button completed the top three, as he registered a competitive time late on to snatch the position from Fernando Alonso, who also looked sharp.
Pastor Maldonado, Mark Webber, Nico Hulkenberg, Paul di Resta, Daniel Ricciardo and Sergio Perez completed the top ten, as both Lotus and Mercedes struggled to find any pace on the Marina Bay Circuit.
The session began slowly as the track recovered from an early downpour, but the surface quickly dried, thanks in part to the GP2 Practice earlier in the morning.
Although more rain was initially forecast, FP1 remained dry and as the sun set, lap times tumbled.
In the early stages the likes of Kimi Raikkonen and Nico Rosberg led the way, but as the surface dried more and more, the Red Bull of Sebastian Vettel came into play.
The current Constructors’ Champions have struggled of late, but the high downforce nature of the Singapore based circuit seems to suit the RB8, as both Vettel and Webber put in some impressive lap times.
The lead was shared between Hamilton and Vettel, but as the session drew to a close in was the Red Bull man who led the way.
There was very little in the way of incident, as drivers up and down the grid adopted a cautious approach, all too aware of the repercussions of hitting the barriers.
Attention now turns to FP2, which may be disturbed by rainy conditions.
