Flavio Briatore has declared that he feels 2012 Drivers’ Championship leader, Fernando Alonso, is the best racer in the last 20 years of the sport.
The Italian ranks the current Ferrari man above the likes of Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton and Mika Hakkinen, as he told Sky Sport 24:
“Fernando Alonso is the best driver of the last 20 years.”
“At times he can make strategic mistakes and is able to recover, and then when in front 90% of the time he wins the race, even if the car isn’t very competitive.
“He lives and breathes for competition alone.”
Briatore also feels that Alonso, and Ferrari, can achieve the success they aim for this season, but it will be tough:
“Red Bull down? I don’t think so. Then there’s Lotus. Then there’s Sauber and the proof that money doesn’t make the difference. McLaren are strong and can take a lot of points off Alonso.
“Ferrari need to improve the car and he has to win at least one race without the McLaren coming second.
“There are lots of points but if you take away first and second place you’re just left with the crumbs.”
