Jenson Button claimed his first pole position with McLaren, as he dominated a sun drenched qualifying session at Spa.
The Brit became the ninth different driver to claim pole in the last nine races at Belgium, as he produced two astonishing laps in Q3, the two quickest of the session.
Kamui Kobayashi guided his Sauber into second place, as he came in just 0.298 seconds slower than Button’s 1.47.573. The ever-controversial Pastor Maldonado completed the top three, making for an interesting grid line-up come race day.
Kimi Raikkonen, Sergio Perez, Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber, Lewis Hamilton, Romain Grosjean and Paul di Resta completed the top ten, however Webber will suffer a 5-place grid drop for a gearbox change.
The real shock of the day came in Q2, as defending World Champion Sebastian Vettel failed to make it through, just losing out to Maldonado, after a poor flying lap.
There was also a shock in Q3, as Nico Rosberg was eliminated after he mistimed his final run. The German slowed up ahead of one final lap, but failed to cross the line before the chequered flag was dropped.
He was joined by the representatives of Caterham, HRT and Marussia at the back end of the grid.
If conditions stay similar during tomorrow’s race, Jenson Button is in with a real chance of securing his second win of the season, and getting his title charge back on track.
